[Teacher Tuesday] Subtraction

Today we start the first chapter of Subtraction in our math series.
It's a pretty intense math series.
Built exclusively from the Common Core Standards.
It's tough.
The tests are long and challenging.
But. . .if we continue teaching with this kind of rigor, our kiddos will have amazing results and be able to think and reason and work through kinds of problems we never thought they could.
I'm excited about that.

In the meantime, because my littles haven't been exposed to this kind of instruction prior to now, they are sort of lost.
Go Math expects them to have a basic knowledge and understanding of addition and subtraction already.
We're playing a LOT of games.
I send a game home for homework every week.
Many of my littles are playing these games with their families - I see a HUGE difference in the ones that do.

We play math and reading games all year long in my classroom.
My littles develop confidence and fluency in the objectives presented in the games.

If you have a struggling learner, there is likely a game or activity to help you help your student become more proficient.  There are so many resources available.  Don't make your kiddo sit through the drudgery of flashcards.  There are better ways.  :)

Wow. . .dragging my soapbox away now.

So. . .back to the topic at hand.
Subtraction.
Yes.  This week.
Today.
It's gonna be tough.
I won't lie.
I'm dreading it a bit.

This is the game that will go home with my littles today.
Space Walk Finger Twister - Subtraction - Facts Through 10.

Lots of fun.
Easy to play.
My own kids LOVE it!

Download it.
Play it.
See what you think.
Maybe this game isn't your favorite.
Maybe it is.

But, for the love of education, PLEASE don't just use flashcards to "help" your student!!
Stop over to my teacher blog (Oh My Little Classity Class) and see what else I have to offer.  You'll be surprised at the lack of resistance you get from your kids when you ask them to play a game.  ;)

[Add It Up] Addition Work Mats

Looking for an easy to use way to assess your kiddos' understanding of basic addition facts?
This download has 2 pages (although it saved as 4, uuggghh - 2 are blank - sorry).
Sums of 1-10.
The kids cross off each number as they use it, requiring a little bit of thinking and planning in order to have enough of the "right" numbers to create each sum.
Give it a shot.
See what you think.

Later this week there will be some extended version options available over at My Little Classity Class.

Have a great week!

IN GOD WE TRUST

I was contacted a couple of weeks ago by my friend Carl Watkins.  He had an idea that he wanted to share with me.

He had recently received an email that stated:

U.S.POSTAL TIP - IMPORTANT

WRITE IT ON THE BACK OF YOUR ENVELOPES or front

WE THINK THIS IS A GREAT IDEA. WE'LL
START WRITING IT ON THE FRONT OF OUR ENVELOPES, TOO!

----------Including Bills

You may have heard in the news that a couple of Post Offices in Texas have been forced to take down small posters that say

'IN GOD WE TRUST,'

The law, they say, is being violated.

Anyway, we heard proposed on a radio station show, that we should all write

“IN GOD WE TRUST”
or “ONE NATION UNDER GOD”
On the back of all our mail.

After all, that's our National Motto, and -----
on All the money we use to buy stamps. We think it's a
Wonderful idea.

We must take back our nation from all the people who

Think that anything that offends them should be removed.

If you like this idea, please pass
It on and DO IT. The idea of writing or stamping............

'IN GOD WE TRUST'

On our envelopes

Sounds good to us
....

SOME PEOPLE ARE HAVING A RUBBER STAMP MADE TO ENSURE IT IS SEEN....

Let’s use it as our signature

On e-mails, too!

It's been reported that 86% of Americans believe in God. Therefore, we have a very hard time understanding why there's such a mess about having'

'In God We Trust!'

On our money and having God in the pledge of Allegiance.

Could it be that WE just need to take action.
--------
That is exactly what Latter-daycrafters.com is going to do!

We have had some of these Rubber and Pre-inked stamps made, that we have listed for sale!

Please join us in supporting the 86% that believe in God, who want Him to continue Blessing our country and our lives.

If you agree, pass this on.

[Teacher Tuesday] Part-Part-Ten

Part-Part-Whole is a BIG NEW way of teaching/learning addition and subtraction.
When children are able to automatically recite the missing addend in an equation, they have a very high understanding of that equation - the parts and the whole.

I recently tested (along with all other first grade teachers in my district) our Chapter 1 test in our new math program (Go Math).
My littles were L.O.S.T. when it came to part-part-whole equations.

I've also heard from some of my 2nd grade teacher friends that the 2nd graders are not quite firm with this concept.

Well. . .I can't let that happen!
So. . .you get the Part-Part-Ten game.
This FREE download (image is linked) is available only through Latter-Day Crafters.
Tomorrow over on my blog, I'll have the Number Bond version of the TENS.
(Same concept, different format).

Thanks for stopping by.
Have a great week!

[Teacher Tuesday] Plus 1 and 1 Plus Circus Facts

Good Morning!

Here's a fun little game to practice adding 1 with your littles.
As a teacher, I've found that the more opportunities we give our littles to practice the SAME things in a DIFFERENT way, the more fluent they become with those skills.

Tomorrow on my blog (www.mrsreynoldsfirstgradeadventures.blogspot.com) I'll be featuring the adding 2 set.  Each day for the next week or so will feature a different set free for that day only.  So, stop by each day and pick up the freebie so you'll have a complete set of addition facts for this fun little circus game.

Have a great day!
